Occupational Therapy (OT) is designed to enable people to live their lives to the full, by providing specialist practical advice and techniques.

Mental and physical health issues can have a huge impact on daily occupations such as self-care, work or study, and leisure and social activities. OT focuses on enabling people to increase their abilities and independence in daily living tasks. An OT can work with children and adults with any number of diagnoses, including anxiety, depression, psychotic disorders, or physical health difficulties. The aim of OT intervention is to listen, support and encourage clients to re-engage or learn new skills in any area of their life that they feel is important to them and their future.

Examples of what OT can assist with:

  • Self-care activities and relaxation

  • Daily routine and structure

  • Relationships and communication styles (including family/friend/partner)

  • Managing social events/holidays

  • Job searches, applications and interview techniques for voluntary/paid work or study

  • Returning to previously enjoyed leisure activities or encouraging engagement in new meaningful leisure pursuits

  • Budgeting and money management

  • Preparation for leaving home or going to university

  • Recommending adaptations or equipment in the home environment in the case of physical disability, to increase independence in daily activities

  • Providing advice and support in grading and adapting tasks to suit your ability and personal goals.

Handwriting:

Handwriting is used to express and communicate language in daily life. It is a whole body skill, involving the integration of motor, cognitive, perceptual and language skills. Handwriting is not a natural skill and therefore needs to be taught and practised.

If your child is struggling with handwriting, our occupational therapist can provide an assessment and intervention plan. This will include a mix of observational and standardised assessments, with tailored individual plans developed for your child's specific needs.

In order to teach handwriting effectively and successfully, the National Handwriting Association recommends the use of 'The S Factor' teaching steps. These include working methodically through developing shape, spacing, size, sitting on the line, stringing together, slant, speed and style of writing. It is also vitally important to consider 'The P checks' (posture, pencil, paper and pressure) to ensure your child can write comfortably and reach the expected level outlined in the National Curriculum.

The OT will work collaboratively with the child, teacher and parent/s in order to provide the most holistic intervention.

Home Assessment for older adults or those with physical disabilities

Are you finding it difficult to manage in your home environment? Are you struggling with managing your personal care or dressing, having difficulty getting on and off the toilet, or in and out of the bath or shower? Do you have difficulty with your mobility, using the stairs in your home or have frequent falls? You may benefit from an occupational therapy assessment in your home environment.

Cost: £500

This includes a full OT initial assessment in your home with our OT, Áine. The assessment can help you to identify your goals and assess your ability to manage everyday tasks. These may include washing and dressing, meal preparation, moving around your home, appropriate seating, or advice on falls prevention. The OT can offer advice on how to increase your independence through grading and adapting tasks. The OT can also make recommendations for minor adaptations or equipment in your home. If adaptive equipment is recommended, this can be ordered on your behalf (any equipment orders will be charged separately). A follow-up visit will then be conducted to assess and educate around safe use of the equipment.
